3.A.1.114.1 Glycolipid exporter (under nitrogen control in heterocysts), DevABC-HgdD (Moslavac et al., 2007). Heterocyst envelope glycolipids (HGLs) function as an O2 diffusion barrier, being deposited over the heterocyst outer membrane, surrounded by an outermost heterocyst polysaccharide envelope. DevBCA and TolC form an ATP-driven efflux pump required for the export of HGLs across the Gram-negative cell wall (Staron et al., 2011). DevB, the MFP, must be hexameric to create a functional export complex. This system is under NtcA and nitrogen control and is required for heterocyst development (Fiedler et al. 2001).
