The 3-d structurre of OprM (also called OprK) is known (1WP1). RND-type xenobiotic transporters recognize hydrophobic substrates such
as organic solvents by their periplasmic domains and expel them to the
external milieu (Li et al. 2006). The MexXY multidrug exporter is frequently overexpressed in ciprofloxacin resistant cells (Serra et al. 2019). Increased expression or overexpression ofMexXY-OprM efflux pumps is the leading cause of carbapenem (imigenem; meropenem) resistance (Petrova et al. 2019).
