The neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-5, CHRNA5 or NACHRA5, of 468 aas and 4 TMSs. After binding acetylcholine, this AChR responds by an extensive change in conformation that affects all subunits and leads to opening of an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. This subunit is similar to the α4 subunit. It regulates vulnerability to alcohol, cocaine and tobacco use disorders (Haller et al. 2014).
