9.C.7 The Low-affinity, Calcium-blocked, Nonspecific Cation Channel (NSC1) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae NSC1 of S. cerevisiaeis the primary low-affinity K⁺ uptake system, but the gene has not been cloned. K⁺ uptake is inhibited by (1) extracellular Ca²⁺, (2) low pH, (3) hydromycin B and (4) TEA⁺. The transporter probably transports K⁺, NH⁴⁺ and Li⁺ among other cations. It may function similarly to the mouse NSC1 (TC #1.A.14.1.1), but no S. cerevisiaegene product shows sequence similarity to this mouse channel protein.
