9.C.7 The Low-affinity, Calcium-blocked, Nonspecific Cation Channel (NSC1) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
NSC1 of S. cerevisiaeis the primary low-affinity K+ uptake system, but the gene has not been cloned. K+ uptake is inhibited by (1) extracellular Ca2+, (2) low pH, (3) hydromycin B and (4) TEA+. The transporter probably transports K+, NH4+ and Li+ among other cations. It may function similarly to the mouse NSC1 (TC #1.A.14.1.1), but no S. cerevisiaegene product shows sequence similarity to this mouse channel protein.
